Some tips in using a window scraper.

Extreme care needs to be exercised in scraping windows, individuals that are scraping windows assume all responsibilities and risk. If you feel you may damage the glass it is recommended that a professional window cleaner be hired.

A window scraper is used to remove caked on debris on glass. This debris may cut and nick the rubber in your squeegee which may result in streaking. There are different types of glass and it is suggested that a trial area be tested before scraping the whole window. A corner of the window would be a good area to test.

Wet the window with a soapy solution, never scrape a dry window, using a new clean scraper, scrape a small section in the corner of the glass/window, always scraping in a forward motion. Do not go back and forth because if any debris become trapped under the blade you may scratch the surface. At first you may experience a feel/sound of the scraper traveling across sandpaper. After three or four scrapes, the feel should be smooth. If the sandpaper feel continues, stop, do not continue scrapping as you may damage the glass. Clean off any remaining solution and check the scraped area closely from different angles for scratching.

Tempered glass, safety glass, raised glass all may contain imperfections that will cause scratching if mot cleaned properly. Tempered glass is most commonly used in (but can be found anywhere) glass doors, side lights, windows located in stairways, oversized picture windows, next to bath tubs and showers, including shower doors and skylights. Most tempered windows or doors will have an etched label in one of the corners that says tempered or safety glass. Always test and check every window for this label before scraping.

Once you have determined that the glass or window is safe to scrape; start with the edges, scrape from the middle of the window towards the outside edge. Work all the way around the window with a 25mm to 50mm pattern. After the edges are scraped, start from the top and work your way towards the bottom, the grime falls down and away from the surface. Scrape in a straight pattern of about 100mm to 125mm while overlapping each time. Remember to always scrape in one direction, never back and forth and to only scrape while the glass is wet. If the window starts to dry out before you are finished, wet it again and then continue where you left off.

When you are window scraping, scrape no more than 50mm to75mm at a time. Do not ever scrape continuously from one end of the window to the other because if something becomes lodged under the blade, it may leave a scratch line all the way across the glass.

Safety googles should be worn to protect eyes from dislodged particles.
